Côtes des Bar

Côte des Bar map

The Côte des Bar lies in the far south of Champagne, around Bar-sur-Aube and Bar-sur-Seine in the Aube department. Although it is geographically further from Reims and Épernay, it is now one of Champagne’s most dynamic and characterful areas.

The landscape is hilly and strongly influenced by nearby Burgundy. The soils are largely Kimmeridgian limestone, the same type found in Chablis. This brings champagnes that are rich, expressive and often a touch riper in profile.

The Côte des Bar is above all Pinot Noir country, where it shows up deeper, fruitier and sometimes even a little spicier. With a warmer climate, grapes reach ideal ripeness, resulting in wines with roundness and depth without losing their fresh elegance.

Today, the Côte des Bar stands for craftsmanship, diversity and renewal. It’s a place where Pinot Noir shows a more southern, generous side, and where many independent growers are reshaping the soul of Champagne.
